Intense lobbying from the student loan companies, including SALLIE MAE created the Higher Education Act. This act made bankruptcy protection non-existent for student loans. It disallowed real refinancing and allowed draconian fees and penalties to be added onto the loan. So, if you started out with a 20K loan, and you DO PAY, by the time you are done, you really pay 60K - even up to 100K. They play games with the day your payment should be in - so you always are behind, even when you're not. They don't credit payments and ruin credit scores. They send you two bills on the same day with the exact same legal mumbo-jumbo, except one bill says you must pay $______ a month and the other says, you must pay $84 dollars more than the first bill, a month. Nice Sallie Mae Monty. If you pay on time for a year or years, and then get sick, you're considered a deadbeat and they keep cranking up the interest and penalties. It would be smarter to pay for your education on a credit card, and
then, if you run into illness or life situations, you can broker a deal or file bankruptcy, and, voila! - student loan - gone ~ And yes,
lgagal, people who rack up 100K in gambling debts DO get those debts discharged in bankruptcy. If you went after those people, you'd have a real, logical argument. So, you're either incapable of reason, logic, and using your brain, or you are a Sallie Mae shill or collector. And you don't scare me.
